A few months ago I got totally hooked on lectures from The Teaching Company. Thanks to my friend at OnlyinItaly.com
I have been spending the bulk of my long commutes listening to lectures about the history of the Roman Empire. From the Punic Wars (and the incredible Hannibal the Carthaginian) to the genius of Caesar Augustus and the mental illness of Caligula and how our Founding Fathers greatly admired and studied Marcus Porcius Cato. I am just now getting to Claudius (who married his niece. eww. She already had a son named Nero…sound familiar)?! Lol. It is a surreal experience to completely escape into a different time. The lectures are delivered in such a compelling way that you can’t helped be pulled back into that era. I am not an Intellectual and I think that’s what is so impressive about the lectures, they are so easy for anyone to follow. It’s amazing how much my life has changed once I cut out gossip sites, tabloids, reality shows, etc. Now I spend my free time with PBS, History International, EWTN, NPR and watching the John Adams mini-series. Haha….ohhh I am getting old!:) If you or someone you know likes history in any way I HIGHLY recommend the Teaching Company. They have any subject you could imagine, from Biblical history to mathematics, art and more. Click here for the website.
On a similar note, Jim and I also recently watched Amadeus and now we are thinking of going to our first Opera! Sadly, the only exposure I have to opera is from watching Pretty Woman! ha ha. I really liked Amadeus when I was younger, and had such a different perspective about Mozart…what a sad life. Anyway, his “Don Giovanni” is coming to the Cleveland Opera and we are debating if we want to take the dive and check it out. It sounds good but I am worried it will be a bust! Lol. That is a lot of money to spend if I fall asleep. Thankfully there are English subtitles! Any opera fans out there?! I would be curious to hear your take.
Okay, back to Professor Fears and Nero!:)
