Gus is taking “Give us this day, our daily bread” quite literally!
A good mealtime prayer is always a great tradition to start if you haven’t already, and there are so many ways to do it. A simple “Our Father,” an informal blessing, or (in our case), the “Give us this day” prayer. At the conclusion we also add our intentions from our prayer jar, which is always growing! If you are looking for a more formal meal blessing, this one by Fr. Edward Hays is a keeper:
In a gloria of gratitude, we are made mindful of the many marvels of life that spark our hearts.
You have not only given us life but continue to increase that life by nourishing us.
Blessed are You, Holy Sustainer, for the marvel of food, for bread and wine, for banquets and dinners, for picnics and suppers.
With compassionate love You fed Moses and his people in the desert, and You sustain us, today, with daily manna at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
We are thankful for Your Son, Jesus, who was the living bread broke, shared, and eaten in love. For this holy bread who calls us, each, to share ourselves unselfishly as food for one another, we bless You, Divine Source.
May each meal we eat be a wonder and worship of You.
Amen+
